Secret Place Essentials

Over the years, I have gathered a collection of essential items that help me remain focused and make the most of my time with Jesus. Each item has a purpose, whether it helps me study Scripture, record what the Lord is speaking, remain consistent in prayer, or reduce unnecessary distractions.

Of course, we do not need special supplies to enter the presence of God. Through Jesus, we can draw near to Him anytime and anywhere. However, preparing a dedicated space with helpful resources allows me to be intentional with the time I have set apart for the Lord. These are my Secret Place Essentials.

  • Bible
The most important item in my secret place is my Bible. I want God’s Word to guide my prayers, renew my mind, and help me recognize His voice.
  • Journal
I use a journal to record prayers, Scriptures, insights, questions, and anything I sense the Lord placing on my heart. Writing also helps me slow down and reflect more deeply.
  • Pens and Highlighters
I keep several pens and highlighters nearby for taking notes, marking meaningful passages, and identifying repeated themes in Scripture.
  • Sticky Notes
Sticky notes are helpful for recording quick thoughts, marking important pages, writing prayer reminders, and displaying Scriptures I want to meditate on.
  • Prayer List or Prayer Cards
A written prayer list helps me pray intentionally for my family, church, community, ministry, and specific needs. It also allows me to record answered prayers and remember God’s faithfulness.
  • Communion Elements
I keep communion elements nearby for the times I feel led to pause and remember the sacrifice of Jesus. Communion helps redirect my attention to the cross and the covenant we have with God through Christ.
  • Map
A map helps me pray specifically for cities, states, nations, missionaries, and unreached people groups. It reminds me that prayer reaches far beyond the walls of my secret place.
  • Book Light
A book light allows me to read early in the morning or late at night without turning on bright overhead lighting.
  • Small Lamp
A softly lit lamp creates a peaceful atmosphere and provides enough light for reading, journaling, and prayer.
  • Reading Glasses and Cleaning Cloth
I keep my reading glasses and a microfiber cleaning cloth nearby so I do not have to interrupt my time to search for them.
  • Music Speaker or Pod
A small speaker or music pod allows me to play worship music, instrumental music, or Scripture softly in the background.
  • Headphones
Headphones are helpful when I need to block out surrounding noise and create a quiet, focused environment.
  • Comfortable Chair and Desk
A supportive chair and a small desk or writing surface make it easier to read, write, and remain focused for an extended period.
  • Cozy Pillows and Blankets
Pillows and blankets make the space comfortable and inviting, especially during early morning prayer or extended time with the Lord.

These items are not what make time with God meaningful. His presence is the treasure. They simply help me prepare a space where I can quiet my surroundings, limit distractions, and give the Lord my full attention.
